1. Private Reference Service
Hampton Residents Directory is privately operated. It provides general information and links about Hampton, Virginia records, public indexes, historical collections, and their access rules. It does not host a government database and has no affiliation with the City of Hampton, a court, a library, or a records custodian.
2. Acceptable Use
Use this reference only for lawful purposes. Do not use information or links to stalk, harass, threaten, intimidate, harm, impersonate, defraud, or invade another person’s privacy. Do not use an official portal in a way that violates its terms, access certification, statute, or technical limits.
3. Not a Consumer Reporting Agency
We are not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Content or links from this service may not be used for credit, employment, tenant screening, insurance, or another FCRA-regulated purpose. A public record, search result, or historical directory entry is not authorization to make a regulated decision about a person.
4. Independent Destinations
Links lead to offices, archives, public portals, and other independent destinations. Their availability, content, terms, payment policies, privacy practices, and search rules are outside our control. A link does not mean that we endorse every statement on the destination or guarantee continued access.
5. No Warranty
Information is provided as a general reference without warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or fitness for a particular purpose. Record systems change. A public index can contain an error, a link can move, and a historical entry can use a former place name. Verify material information with the official custodian.
6. Liability Limits
To the fullest extent allowed by law, Hampton Residents Directory and its operators are not liable for losses, claims, damages, or expenses arising from use of, inability to use, or reliance on this service, its content, or an outside link. This limitation applies whether the claim is based on contract, tort, or another theory.
7. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the operators of Hampton Residents Directory from claims, liabilities, damages, and reasonable expenses arising from your use of the service, violation of these terms, or violation of another person’s rights.
8. Intellectual Property
The site’s original text, selection, arrangement, branding, and design are protected by applicable law. Official records, archival materials, government resources, and third-party materials may carry separate rights or access conditions. Obtain permission from the relevant owner before reproducing material beyond a lawful use.
9. Revised Terms
We may change these terms when service practices, law, or linked-source conditions change. The revised version will be posted here. Continued use after posting means acceptance of the revised terms to the extent permitted by law.
10. Access Restrictions
We may suspend or end access for conduct that violates these terms, threatens the service, creates a security concern, or appears unlawful. This action does not limit any other right or remedy available to us.
11. Virginia Law
These terms are governed by Virginia law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Hampton public-record requests are governed by the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, Va. Code §2.2-3700 et seq., including the request procedure in §2.2-3704. That statute does not require a public body to create a new directory or disclose protected records.
12. Severability
If a provision of these terms is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain effective. The affected provision will be interpreted as closely as possible to its original lawful purpose.
13. Questions
Questions about these terms may be sent through the Contact page. Requests for a government record, certified copy, correction, or access decision must be directed to the office that holds that record.
